100 Suicide

The light installation, “100 suicides,” examines why South Korea’s suicide rate (Suicides per 100,000 people per year) is the forth place in the world. Of 246,000 deaths last year, 12,047 cases were reported as suicides. The death rate translates into an average of 33 people a day taking their lives. Since the Lehman brother’s bankruptcy, the Korean economic confronts difficulties, and this leads a big part of reason that people easily give up their lives. The suicide is also regarded as a taboo in Korean culture, so the news does not report the full name of suicide unless the suicide is a significant or famous person. Personally it is valuable to bring the erased person regarded as dishonorably into the surface of our society and think about why they have to choose this extreme method to escape from the reality.
