My work stems from the effort to locate myself between the society where I am from and the society where I live. In my work, I investigate contemporary social, political, economic, and cultural issues in South Korea as well as in the United States. I address these issues to reveal the uneasy living condition in a depressed environment where economic and social conflict exists. Particularly after Lehman Brothers declared its bankruptcy, the economic situation in the United States as well as in other countries whose export and import systems depend on the U.S. abruptly lost its stability. This reminds me that the world does not consist of parts but as one piece. Reading the Korean and American news everyday causes me to pose questions of why by realizing that the current economic crisis is prompted by not only the system of global capitalism but also by cultural phenomena, such as joblessness, homelessness, suicide, protests, and wars.
I work with materials of cataloged data, quotations, graphs, and other representations of information from Korean and American news sources. I read articles, which address todays important issues and then adopt them into my work literally or thematically. Initially I merged text, numerical data and everyday objects that defined social issues within my personal experience and culture. From then, I have expanded my work to the public sphere to create a relational experience because my work dealt with common social issues that impacted our lives. I employ performance as a way for merging art and life and finding a role for art in social contexts. Through my work, I attempt to bring alternative means of communication, liberation, and self-analysis and a platform for dialogue regarding contemporary global cultural phenomena.
